Michicon 2009 News
The D-Savages Recap
by Alan Meranda
Talk about a surprising event! Not only being on the demo team for
Savage Worlds in the Metro Detroit area, I also function as the
Director of Role-Playing Games for the Metro Detroit Gamers which put
on MichiCon 2009. Overall it’s safe to say that MichiCon 2009
was
a success. I am not privy to final attendance figures, but I am certain
that we easily had over 500 people participating over the two days.
WinterCon 2009 in December should be a blast! The only regret I have is
it will be 6 months till the next Metro Detroit Gamers Gaming
Convention.
Friday’s Savage Worlds event was run by John Jamieson and was
an
introductory game into role-playing using the Savage Worlds Explorers
edition and was a fantasy game. Two of the players in the game were new
to Savage Worlds and left wanting more and played again on Saturday
evening in my Savage Worlds take on FireFly/Serenity. The game went
smoothly with all the players being assisted in the creation of
characters before play actually began. Another player was anxious to
play more and plans on joining the regular Slipstream game being run on
Sundays by myself.
Saturday’s events were as follows: John was running his take
on
Gamma World using Savage Worlds. I followed that up with a Heroes game
based off of the NBC TV show of the same name using Necessary Evil.
After that is when I ran my Savage Worlds take on FireFly/Serenity.
John and I were both pleased with the turn-out for the Savage World
events on Saturday.
The Gamma World game was a riot. John had some awesome mutant
characters created that all the players enjoyed playing. Having only
4.5 hours to play the game was not enough time. The players wanted to
play longer. The party was hired to acquire data and storage devices
from a bygone era of man in what remained of Chicago. A battle occurred
on a metal bridge in which the mutant vampiric flying octopus player
terrified all of the players and NPC’s. Reaching the intact
science complex and deciphering what happened and the battle with the
final hideous mutation was fierce. Two players were stunned for a round
immediately, another had their only ranged weapon break due to a
snake-eyes roll on an attack. The players finally won.
Heroes played with six people. What I did to resemble the TV show was I
created pre-gen characters with out Edges, Hindrances or Powers. Based
off playing card draws, everybody wound up with one of 24 possible
Necessary Evil Powers and edges and Hindrances to go along with it. The
randomness of getting powers really matched up with what happens to
characters on the show.
There was a plane crash, intrigue on the plane as it was sinking, and a
struggle with one of the passengers after he saw a player teleport from
inside the plane to one of the wings. The players eventually made it to
a mysterious island. After a brief rest a gigantic crab attacked the
players. One of the characters morphed into a human sized dinosaur and
attacked the character dealing it savage damages with several Aces on
damage roles. Another player using the powers of elemental control over
earth dished out some damage too.
The players eventually made it to the final battle having to fight off
huge bees. One of the players had a cat with them and the cat ate some
mana of the gods and became a saber-tooth tiger. One of the players
used their power, burrow, and went into the ground. To their initial
dismay their legs were hanging in a huge cavern. Doing a spin within
the ground, the character discovered the cavern contained docked in an
underground submarine pen, Captain Nemo’s Nautilus.
The FireFly/Serenity game was well played by all of the players. All of
the characters were the ones from the TV show. I was impressed with the
player doing Capt. Mal Reynolds. The most amazing thing was how the
players defeated the double-crossing member of the Browncoat
resistance. They did so by patching into the Universe Network when the
main villain went off due to a Villainous Verbosity Savage Worlds
action card being played. It wasn’t long before the Browncoat
resistance sent somebody out to collect the villain before his
nefarious plans were put into play. The character playing River was
outstanding. The chase through a meteor field by the Reavers went well
too. I used the Slipstream cardboard cut-outs for that.
At one of the local gaming establishments in Madison Heights, Michigan
will be a regular Savage Worlds gaming night. Be sure to check out our
Yahoo Group for more information.
